DECLUTTERING – because your closet in not a museum

Let’s talk about the moment each of us has gone through in our lives. When we enter our closets and suddenly the words “I don’t have anything to wear leaves our mouth,” being well buried in a closet which has no space for new clothes. The idea of decluttering sounds like an activity that is reserved for overly enthusiastic and organised individuals but it is much beyond that – it is a skill which is futuristic at its best.

Decluttering can be made easy by taking the messy road first, as ironic as it sounds to declutter it becomes imperative to lay out all that belongs in your closet. Sort through your clothes and before you put them back in your closet ask yourself have I worn this recently?Would I wear this in the future? If the answer to these questions is no, then it’s time you don’t rethink and let that clothing item go. Your wardrobe should reflect you and even though these pieces have been a part of some moment in your life, you let those pieces go to reinvent both yourself and the discarded clothes.

Once you have a pile of discarded clothes, it’s time to sort through them and divide them into three sections. The first would be clothes which could be reused as they are, second would be clothes which would look as good as new once repaired and lastly clothes which are worn out but could be recycled into something innovative.

Reuse, Repair and Recycle gives your clothes a second life. You can swap these old clothes with your friends or if you feel they have no use then donate them. Run wild with your imagination and convert them into tote bags, crop tops or rags. Lastly, you can send them to organisations like ours which would do this work for you, employ labourers and give new life to your discarded items protecting the environment from becoming saturated with methane.

Decluttering is only a part of environmental sustainability. For this to sustain we need to become more conscious of the choices we make in buying a new set of clothing items. Because let’s be honest your closet doesn’t need to be a cluttered mess when it could be a conscious adventure.

Decluttering is not goodbye to your clothes – it’s a goodbye to chaos and welcome to innovation.
