From Posts to Purpose – Our Journey to a community of more than one lakh
What began as one of the first Instagram pages in India to talk about fashion waste is now a community with almost two lakh followers. We have built more than just a digital presence, we have built a movement.
When we started this movement it was met with utter silence, the topic was unfamiliar, uncomfortable and even came with a lot of inconvenience. But we persisted – continued our work and posted about the landfill’s situation accompanied by verified statistics and starting showing the real world dilemma of what “waste” actually looks like. We urged people through our posts that waste is beyond what you find in landfills, it’s also in your closets and it’s rooted in our everyday usage.
What we gained was clarity, fashion isn’t just about style it is a system – how one wears, makes and discards. We gained and created a platform which does beyond educating but also mobilises. Brands started reaching out, so did colleges, students and citizens who wanted to be a part of the impact. The conversations became more diverse and impactful.
While we gained, we also lost some things along the way. With growth comes responsibility, the pressure to be consistent and the need to balance digital storytelling with real world action. With this evolution, we lost the simplicity of a content page.
The evolution that we witnessed birther Respun, as a tangible movement to the problem that has either been neglected or only been talked about but never world upon.
Now, our goal is to go beyond conversations, deep into building India’s first inclusive, scalable textile recycling ecosystem. We are building an infrastructure, which creates an impact and provides dignified employment.
