RETHINKING FASHION WASTE – How students at LPU are turning scraps into sustainability statements

At Respun, we believe that change lies in the hands of those who are bold enough to challenge the status quo. We empower minds to take a detour from the fast fashion industry by giving them an opportunity to use innovation, creativity and self expression to create statements from scraps. This mission was reaffirmed during our collaboration with Lovely Professional University.

The collaboration began as a shared vision – a goal to bridge the gap between fashion and sustainability. We wanted to provide students with a platform without any restrictions on innovation, all they were required to do was transform the scraps we provided them with into tangible pieces. This challenge was based on the foundation which asked the participants to rethink fashion waste – not as a problem but as a broad spectrum of canvas where they could color the way it deemed fit. The overwhelming enthusiasm showcased by the students and faculty is what birthed this partnership.

We sent over 350 kg of textile waste to the university and each group of students was given a mystery box of materials with a single mission – innovate beyond boundaries. What followed was a showcase of stunning upcycled garments, fascinating art pieces and amazing utility products, this reflected the unique craftsmanship of the students. These pieces were not merely designs, they were declarations – a proof that sustainability and fashion cannot merely coexist but rather thrive when the ambiance offers freedom to create and innovate.

To celebrate this exceptional craftsmanship witnessed from the pieces of LPU students we hosted a runway showcase at Montrose Fashion Week, where more than 20 students walked the ramp in their own upcycled creations. The showcase was beyond breathtaking; it was ideologically powerful.

The experience was simple yet what it taught was that all it requires is the right motivation, resources and creative freedom to create something which is powerful. Young minds and especially young designers are ready for a challenge – they are ready to bring a change all they need is an opportunity which showcases their ideas to the eyes of the world.

This showcase is just an instance of a future which does not cost the planet and the generation of designers who are willing to shape it.
